Managing Noise in Adaptive Reuse Projects
Adaptive reuse gives architects and building owners an opportunity to transform existing commercial buildings into new residential and mixed-use spaces. However, buildings originally designed for commercial occupancy space can present unique acoustic challenges as the expectations of the space changes.
Existing wall assemblies, structural systems, HVAC infrastructure, and other building conditions can all influence how sound travels through a building. Addressing these conditions effectively requires looking beyond individual wall assemblies and considering acoustics as part of the overall building design.
Looking Beyond STC
Sound Transmission Class (STC) is an important tool for evaluating wall and floor-ceiling assemblies, but an STC rating alone doesn’t account for every path sound can follow through a building.
Flanking paths, structure-borne noise, HVAC systems, penetrations, and construction detailing can all affect real-world acoustic performance. In adaptive reuse projects, these conditions can be especially important because many structural and mechanical elements are already in place.
Identifying potential sound-transmission paths early gives architects an opportunity to coordinate architectural, structural, and mechanical systems before acoustic issues become more difficult to address.
Go Deeper with Our Continuing Education Course
PABCO Gypsum’s Designing for Quiet: Managing Noise in Adaptive Reuse Projects takes a deeper look at the acoustic challenges associated with converting commercial buildings to multifamily residential and mixed-use occupancies.
Take the On-Demand Course at BNP CE Center
Designed for architects, specifiers, building owners, and other design professionals familiar with building acoustics, the course explores:
- Identifying sound-transmission paths and mitigation strategies.
- Understanding why STC ratings alone may not predict real-world acoustic performance.
- Coordinating building assemblies, structural conditions, and mechanical systems.
- Recognizing where the performance-to-cost relationship shifts in sound-rated wall design.
